Flagler Wins Second Straight PBC Women’s Cross Country Title

LUMBERTON, NC – The Flagler College Saints placed three runners in the top 10 and all five of their scoring runners in the top 15 as they captured the 2019 Peach Belt Conference women's cross country championship on Saturday.  Flagler becomes the first repeat champions since former member Montevallo finished a run of three straight in 2016.  The event was held at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton and hosted by UNC Pembroke.

Augusta's Micah Weathers captured the individual championship, covering the 5k course in 18:03.22.  The junior cleared the field by over 45 seconds and becomes the first Jaguar to win the PBC Individual Championship.

North Georgia finished in second in the team standings with 49 points, just nine behind Flagler.  The nine-point margin of victory is the closest in the league since Clayton State won the 2012 title by seven.  UNG placed four runners in the top 11, led by Bree Hammond in fifth with a time of 19:00.56.

Augusta finished third with Columbus State fourth and UNC Pembroke fifth.  All 12 PBC member schools competed, the largest field for the women's race in three years.

Flagler was led by junior Malia Cryan, who finished second in a time of 18:48.41.  UNC Pembroke's Erman Jepleting was third with Flagler's Kayla McManama in fourth.  The top 15 runners were named to the All-Conference team.

North Georgia's Karmen Leroy was named the PBC Freshman of the Year as the highest-finishing freshman.  Leroy ran 19:19.82 to finish 10th and earn All-Conference honors.  She becomes the first Nighthawk to ever be named the Freshman of the Year.

Flagler's Brian Beil was tabbed the Coach of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches taken after the championship.  Beil claims his second straight women's Coach of the Year honor, he has also won once for coaching the men's program.
