FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University women's tennis coach Garth Thomson has announced the signing of Mikael Hermon of Karlskrona, Sweden, and Gabriel Karatantcheva of Sofia, Bulgaria, to national letters of intent to attend FMU this fall and play for the Patriots in 2020.
Hermon, 5-2, is a transfer from ASA College Brooklyn campus, but she will have four years to play at FMU. She is a graduate of Malmö idrottsgymnasium in Sweden.
"Mikael attended a junior college in New York with the intention of playing tennis, but the school dropped the sport after she enrolled," Thomson said. "She is now hungry to get back out on the courts and play competitively. She has had some good results playing in Sweden, and I expect her to play in our top four."
Karatantcheva, 5-9, has attended both Sveti Naum Ohridski in Sofia and Manatee High School in Bradenton, Fla.
She played two seasons as the No.1 player at Manatee, and is a past Super Series winner and Super Series finalist (girls U18).
"Gabriel is a very consistent player, who doesn't miss shots. She has a sister (Sesil) playing professionally, so she has a lot of tennis experience. I am excited about her joining our program. I look for her to fill one of our top two spots, and if that happens, our line-up strength will be greatly enhanced."
The recent 2019 Francis Marion squad posted a 14-8 record and placed sixth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season. The Patriots return five of seven letterwinners off that team.
