Armstrong State Opens New Tennis Center

SAVANNAH, GA --  On Thursday, August 18, Armstrong unveiled its newest addition to campus – a state-of-the-art tennis complex– with a ribbon cutting, led by President Linda M. Bleicken. She addressed the afternoon crowd, a mix of the university's national champion tennis team members, former players, past and present coaches, university officials, student and faculty supporters, alumni and media.

"Over the last two decades, our tennis teams have brought home 13 national titles and had the opportunity to travel across the United States to face top-level competition," said Bleicken. "Today is a homecoming for Armstrong tennis. We've been fortunate to be guests of Bacon Park for the last few years, but we're going to enjoy playing at home. Part of why today's ribbon cutting is so important is the fact that this new tennis complex serves as a homecoming -- both symbolically and literally -- for our student-athletes."

The new facility, which is located adjacent to the intramural fields near Windward Commons, features 12 hard courts, lights and electronic scoreboards.

"It's going to be great for our teams and it's going to generate a lot of school spirit," said Sean McCaffrey, head coach to both Armstrong's men's and women's tennis teams. "Our program has established itself as one of the best in the nation with our players excellence, but this is going to put us in a different bracket and allow us to shine even brighter."

McCaffrey also noted that a second phase is currently in the works and will include a clubhouse, outfitted with locker rooms, a lounge, study areas and offices, as well as a pavilion, to anchor the tennis complex. In addition, tennis tournaments, adult leagues and clinics will be held for the Savannah community at large.

The event wrapped with a ceremonial first serve by a dozen Armstrong VIPs. Following, the current women's and men's tennis teams enjoyed their first opportunity to hit on the new courts.

"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes," noted Bleicken. "We are committed to supporting their success, both on and off the court."
