10 PBC Women’s Tennis Players Named All-American

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has named 10 Peach Belt women’s tennis players All-Americans. Armstrong Atlantic State, the two-time national champion, has four players named to the team while Francis Marion added three. Clayton State is next with two All-Americans while Columbus State has one. To be named an All-American by the ITA, a players must be ranked in the top 20 singles or top 10 doubles teams in the final national rankings.

For AASU, Freshman Sona Novakova, who capped an undefeated dual match season in singles, finishes the 2009 season as the top-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, earning All-America singles honors. It is the fourth straight year that the Lady Pirates have featured the No. 1-ranked singles player in the nation, following Luisa Cowper (2006) and Iuliia Stupak (2007, 2008).

Sophomore Alida Muller-Wehlau also earns All-America singles honors for a second time, finishing the year ranked No. 12 in the nation, while junior Gabriella Kovacs also earns All-America singles honors for a second time as she finishes the year ranked No. 14 in the nation.

In doubles, Muller-Wehlau and junior Martina Beckmann are the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, earning ITA All-American honors in doubles for a second straight season. The duo of Novakova and Kovacs finished the year ranked No. 5, also earning ITA All-American doubles honors.

Francis Marion’s Tereza Sykorova finished the year ranked 13th nationally in singles to earn All-America status. The junior from Prague, Czech Republic, was 17-6 at #1 singles for the Patriots and named first-team All-Conference.

The Patriot doubles team of Jitka Gavdunova and Kristyna Horakova were also named first-team All-Conference by the Peach Belt and were #3 in the ITA final doubles rankings of 2009. The tandem was 15-2 at #1 doubles for FMU and 5-0 at #2.

Clayton State’s Katie White and Viktoriya Semyrodenko were also named All-American at doubles. White, a sophomore from Wolverhampton, England, and Semyrodenko, a sophomore from Donetsk, Ukraine, become the fourth different doubles team from Clayton State to earn All-American honors. It’s also the third straight season and fourth in the last five years that a Laker doubles team has been selected Division II All-American.

White and Semyrodenko finished 10-6 this season at No. 1 doubles for the Lakers. They finished the season ranked ninth in the nation in doubles and fourth in the Division II Southeast Region. This past fall, White and Semyrodenko became the third straight Clayton State doubles team to win the ITA Regional championship, and the second Laker doubles team in the last three seasons to advance to the ITA Division II national finals.

Columbus State's Eva Petschnig was named an All-American and finished the season ranked #5 in the country. Petschnig had an outstanding senior season with an 18-1 singles mark. In addition, she teamed with doubles partner Lindsey Groenewald (10-4) for most of the season and finished just one spot out of All-American status in doubles play with a #11 ranking. Roxana Dondera finished #30 in the country with a 14-8 singles record. Dondera teamed with Hanane Toumi in doubles play and finished the year at #20 with a 10-5 doubles mark.
