Apr 12, 2009 AASU Captures 15th PBC Women's Tennis Title With 9-0 Win At North Ga. DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The No. 3-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State
women's tennis team captured its 15th Peach Belt Conference regular
season title outright with a 9-0 victory over North Georgia on
Easter Sunday in Dahlonega.
The Lady Pirates (19-1, 10-0 PBC) will now head to the 2009 PBC
Tennis Championships in Jonesboro, Ga., as the top seed after
sweeping through the Peach Belt undefeated. AASU has now won 62
straight regular season PBC matches, dating back to 2003. North
Georgia (6-16, 1-9 PBC) will await further action to determine its
seeding for the tournament.
AASU dropped just four games for the entire match against the Lady
Saints, sweeping all three doubles matches and winning all six
singles matches in straight sets. Second-ranked Alida Muller-Wehlau
and Martina Beckmann defeated Velina Boteva and Maria Dreaden, 8-1,
at No. 1 singles, while seventh-ranked Sona Novakova and Gabriella
Kovacs defeated Meredith Cash and Ashley Marie Jordan, 8-0, at No.
2 doubles. Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel defeated Katherine
Harrison and Mallory Perloff, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.
Top-ranked Novakova finished an undefeated dual match season in
singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Boteva at No. 1 singles.
16th-ranked Muller-Wehlau defeated Dreaden, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2
singles, while 19th-ranked Kovacs blanked Cash, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3
singles.
Ronel shut out Harrison, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, while Henry
beat Jordan, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. Alisa Kagukina finished
the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Perloff.
