Peach Belt Announces Women’s Soccer Tournament Bracket

AUGUSTA, GA – Following a dramatic final day of the regular season, the Peach Belt Conference has announced the schedule for the 2013 women's soccer tournament championship, set to begin this Tuesday, Nov. 5.    Tuesday's quarterfinals will be hosted by the higher-seeded team.  The four winners of those games will travel to Evans, Ga., and Blanchard Woods Park for the PBC semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8 with the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 10.

For the first time in school history, Clayton State is the #1 seed for the tournament.  The Lakers finished in a tie atop the PBC standings with Columbus State, but take the top seed thanks to their 3-0 win over the Cougars back on Oct. 20.  Clayton State and Columbus State were also tied atop the standings in the 2005 season, but that year CSU took the top spot.

Clayton State will face eighth-seeded Montevallo in the first round of the PBC Tournament on Tuesday.  Montevallo grabbed the final spot in the tournament by beating Young Harris 2-1 on Saturday and having USC Aiken fall to North Georgia 2-0.  That result left both teams with 11 points and tied for the last slot, Montevallo wins the tiebreaker thanks to their 3-2 overtime win over USCA on Oct. 19.

Columbus State claims a share of the PBC regular-season championship alongside Clayton State; their PBC-best seventh regular-season championship.  CSU will be the #2 seed in the tournament, looking to return to the championship game for a third straight year.  The Cougars will face seventh-seeded UNC Pembroke on Tuesday.  UNCP will make a return trip to Columbus after falling to the Cougars 2-0 in Saturday's regular-season finale.

Armstrong Atlantic State defeated Lander 2-0 on Saturday to take the #3 seed away from the Bearcats.  The Pirates finish the regular season with five straight wins and finished one point ahead of Lander for the seed.  Armstrong, the two-time defending PBC Tournament Champions will take on sixth-seeded Georgia College in Tuesday's quarterfinals.  Georgia College fell to Flagler in Saturday's regular-season finale and were 5-4-2 in league play this season.

With Saturday's loss, Lander falls to the #4 seed for the tournament but will still host a first-round game.  The Bearcats are 8-3 in league play this season and will host a first-round game for the third year in a row.  Lander will face #10 North Georgia in Tuesday's quarterfinal.  The Nighthawks beat USC Aiken 2-0 in Saturday's regular-season finale and have won three of their last four to finish the year; the lone loss coming at Lander on Oct. 30.

The PBC tournament games at Blanchard Woods Park will feature a new format as, for the first time, all semifinal games will be played on the main stadium field.  In years past, Friday's semifinals were played consecutively on two of the upper fields at the complex with only Sunday's championship finals in the stadium field.  Blanchard Woods Park is also the home for the 2013 NCAA men's and women's soccer national championships.  The Peach Belt Conference is serving as host.
