Columbus State Falls to West Florida 1-0 in NCAA Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, FLA -- The third-ranked Columbus State Cougars surrendered an early goal to West Florida and then could not find a way to answer as they fell 1-0 in the NCAA National Quarterfinals on Sunday in Pensacola. For the second straight season, CSU sees their season come to a close in the elite eight, their year ends with a 21-4-1 overall record. West Florida remains unbeaten, improving to 23-0-1.

West Florida, ranked #2 in the nation, began the game on fire, scoring on their first shot of the game. With just 5:22 elapsed, UWF's Dernelle Mascall headed home a corner kick delivered by Jodi Galucci past diving CSU keeper Monica Sanchez.

The rest of the half was a defensive struggle as the Argonauts did not allow the Cougars to put a shot on goal and held a 5-3 shots advantage.

Columbus State attempted to put on the pressure in the second half. Stephanie Parrish put a header towards the goal at the 74:51 mark and Kellie Myles had another five minutes later, but both were saved by Argonaut goalkeeper Courtney Jones.

UWF finished the game with an 11-6 edge in shots while Columbus State had six corners to UWF's five. West Florida will advance to the final four in Tampa, Fla., Dec. 5-7.
