Women's Basketball 2009-10 Notes - March 1

Armstrong Atlantic State (9-17, 6-12) -- The Armstrong Atlantic State women's basketball squad kept their postseason hopes alive on Wednesday by erasing an 18-point first-half deficit to knock off UNC Pembroke, 83-80, in overtime ... The Lady Pirates hit a school-record 13 three-pointers in the win, breaking the old record of 12 set twice previously, against GCSU on Feb. 16, 2005 and against Shaw on Nov. 25, 2006 ... Senior Portia Jones notched a career-high 28 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Lauren Hall added 18 points and Dartayvia Thomas notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds ... AASU went into Saturday's contest with nationally-ranked Francis Marion needing a win to stay in contention for a PBC Tournament berth ... FMU shot 59.5 percent in the second half, however, en route to a 104-81 win, ending the Lady Pirates' season ... Jones again led the Lady Pirates with 22 points with Lauren Hall chipping in 18 ... The Lady Pirates failed to defeat a nationally-ranked foe for the first season since 1999-2000, going 0-4 this season against ranked clubs ... Head coach Matt Schmidt loses three seniors from this season's squad - Jones, who scored 577 points in three seasons and ranks seventh all-time in three-point baskets made at AASU; Thomas, who set the single-season free throw percentage mark as a junior and scored 693 points in her four seasons, as well as ranking second all-time in free throw percentage; and Hall, who averaged a team-best 13.3 points per game this season ... AASU returns 11 players for the 2010-11 season.
 

 Augusta State (1-26, 0-18) -- The Lady Jaguars closed out the season Saturday, Feb. 27 with a 63-56 loss to 10th-ranked Lander on Senior Night in Christenberry Fieldhouse ... Junior shooting guard Blaire Egardo tallied 16 points and senior forward Kirsten Stallings managed 13 points and seven rebounds ... Senior point guard Eboni Davis booked nine assists and seven rebounds ... The setback was the 23rd straight loss for the Lady Jags, which marks a school record ... The previous school record for consecutive losses was 11 in a row ... The previous worst season in school history was a pair of 9-13 seasons in 1976-77 and 1980-81 ... ASU’s 76-46 home loss to No. 22 Carson-Newman on Dec. 30 marked the first game for the Lady Jaguars under interim head coach Clint Bryant ... Following a 61-45 loss to West Georgia on Dec. 19, head coach Tes Sobomehin was reassigned by Bryant, ASU’s Director of Athletics.
 

 Clayton State (21-6, 12-5) -- The Clayton State Lakers finished out the regular season with two key victories - 71-63 at North Georgia and 78-68 against Georgia Southwesrtern... The victory over North Georgia clinched the sixth straight 20-victory season for Clayton State. Only one other team in Peach Belt Conference history has accomplished that feat (Columbus State 1999-2004)... Teshymia Tillman scored 21 points to pace the Lakers, followed by Tanisha Woodard with 13 points, Latonda Bruce with 11 points and LaDe'sha Stoudemire scored 10 points... Tillman scored a career-high 31 points as the Lakers used a strong second half to down Georgia Southwestern. Stoudemire recorded her fifth double-double on the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Genesis Kelly scored 12 points... Clayton State slipped to 22nd in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll... Clayton State head coach Dennis Cox is now 146-43 with a winning percentage of .772, ranking him as the fourth-winningest active head coach in Division II... Clayton State is now 104-11 under Cox with a winning percentage of .904 when scoring 70-or-more points in a game... Clayton State will play host to in-state rival Columbus State in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
 

 Columbus State (17-10, 11-6) -- CSU closed out the regular season on a high note, winning its last two games...On Wednesday, the Lady Cougars held off Georgia Southwestern 65-62, led by Phebe Smith's 18 points...On Saturday, Smith posted another double-double to finish the regular season with 17 points and 12 boards at Montevallo in an overtime win...Freshman Kelsey Weynand hit the shot of her young career on Saturday to force overtime, drilling a three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation...For the second time this year, CSU won an overtime game by holding their opponent scoreless in the extra frame as they out-scored Montevallo 10-0 in the period...Smith dramatically improved her free-throw shooting for the week as she hit 82 percent (13-16) in the two games...She had been struggling recently in that category...The team has struggled at the line all season, but improved in the last two games, hitting 68 percent...As a team for the year, the Lady Cougars are at just 56 percent...CSU will now face Clayton State on Tuesday in the PBC Tournament quarterfinal round...The two teams have a healthy rivalry and split the two regular season contest, each winning on the other's home floor.
 

 Flagler (8-19, 3-15) -- Flagler closed its season with a 0-2 week...Charlsea Owen averaged 15.5 point per game and shot 50% (12-24) from the field and 54.5% (6-11) from 3-point range last week...Adrienne Donelson averaged 9.5 points and 2.5 blocks per game and shot 64.3% (9-14) from the field...Jalisa Foster closed out her career with 8.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last week...Owen scored a team-high 21 points vs. No. 18 Francis Marion...Foster added 13 points and eight rebounds...Donelson scored a team-high 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots at UNC Pembroke...Chanti Beckett and Jen Mitchell finished the season with 11.2 and 10.3 points per game, respectively...Foster led the team in rebounding with a 7.3 per game average...Rachel Brown tied the school record for blocks in a game with six (at Lander).
 

 Francis Marion (24-3, 15-2) -- FMU, ranked #18 in the latest Top 25 poll, won two PBC road games last week, to conclude its regular season. FMU reached the century mark in consecutive PBC games for the first time in team history. FMU was a combined 46-for-71 (65%) from the floor in the two second halfs of those contests....FMU has won 20 games for the 22nd time in 37 all-time season (and third straight)....Over its past 59 games, FMU is 51-8....FMU is 22-1 against non-conference opponents in three years under head coach Heather Macy....Junior G-F Shannon Singleton-Bates averaged 23.5 ppg on 69% shooting and 4.5 rpg last week, while senior G Eboni Fields averaged 17 ppg. Over her past eight games, Fields is 32-of-69 from three-point distance. She has scored at least 16 points in 8 straight games.....Singleton-Bates, who stands 24th on the Patriot career scoring list with 1143 points, leads the team with a 16.3 ppg season average....Senior Precious Tucker leads FMU in rebounding at 6.6 rpg.....Senior F Nicole Mealing has 1,072 career points in 1 year at FMU and 3 years at ASU....This season, junior PG Robin Colbert has 143 assists, 101 steals, 20 blocks, and only 67 turnovers. She is fourth nationally in steals per game and 19th in assists/turnover ratio....FMU, which led Division II in scoring offense each of the past two seasons, is averaging 90.9 ppg this year (second-best in Division II).....FMU is 56-4 in its last 60 games when scoring 85 points or more (over 10 seasons)....In its 27 contests, FMU is forcing 31.6 turnovers per contest (resulting in 891 points). FMU leads D2 in steals per game and is 2nd in turnover margin....11 different Patriots (of the team’s 14) have scored in double figures at least once this season....FMU is 155-40 in its last 195 home games in the Smith University Center (14-1 this year)....FMU has made consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2009....Second-seeded FMU plays host to third-seeded USCA on March 2 at 7 p.m. in a first-round PBC Tournament game. FMU is 14-16 all-time in PBC tournament play, including the 1998 title.
 

 GCSU (20-7, 13-4) -- Receiving votes in national poll, #6 in region … Georgia College picked up two big wins in the final regular-season week, reaching the 20-victory plateau for the ninth time in school history … GCSU beat Montevallo at home 64-54 Wednesday, and went to North Georgia for a 72-68 overtime win Saturday ... Antoinette Reames exploded for 23 points and 16 boards, while Jordan had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the NGCSU victory ... Jordan averaged 21.5ppg, 11.0rpg and 4.0spg over the two games ...  Georgia Southwestern (12-15, 7-10) -- The Lady Hurricanes dropped a pair of PBC West Division road games last week, opening with a 65-62 loss on Wednesday at Columbus State, before finishing the regular season with a 78-68 loss at Clayton State on Saturday...In a game that was close throughout at Columbus State - no team led by more than eight points - GSW relinquished the lead for the first time at the 13:23 mark of the second period (43-41). The teams flip-flopped the lead four more times before CSU took the lead for good with 41 seconds left on the clock. The score had remained tied at 62-62 for a three minute and 22 second span up until that point. Whitley Wiltz finished with 17 points to lead the Lady Hurricanes. Kanita Holloway chipped in 13. Nadirah Gardner grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds...On Saturday at Clayton State, GSW led at the half (32-30) and held a five-point lead (55-50) with 9:49 remaining before the Lakers went on a 22-5 run to put the game out of reach. The Lady 'Canes shot 54 percent in the second stanza, but it wasn't enough. Wiltz led GSW with 13 points. Gardner added 12 (all scored in the second half) and Jessica Bivins chipped in 11...Brittany Reynolds finishes the regular season ranked 14th in the PBC in scoring average (11.8 ppg), 8th in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and sixth in steals (2.1 per game). Wiltz sits 16th in scoring (11.4 ppg), fifth in rebounding (8.4 rpg) and 7th in free throw percentage (75.9)...Southwestern, a program that was 1-26 two seasons ago, will make their first-ever PBC Tournament appearance on Tuesday at Georgia College.
 

 Lander (24-2, 17-1) -- Lander clinched its third Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship Saturday with a 63-56 victory over Augusta State. Earlier in the week, the Lady Bearcats, who are ranked No. 10 in the latest USA Today/ESPN national coaches poll, defeated USC Aiken, 74-52. With 24 victories, Lander, the No. 1 team in the Southeast Region, tied the school record for wins in a season. The 2003-04 team also won the Peach Belt Conference regular-season title and finished with a 24-6 record. The Lady Bearcats are led by junior Shannon McKever, who has posted 13 double-doubles this season and is averaging a team-high 14.1 points and 10 rebounds per game. Ciara Lyons is averaging 12.2 points and Brittni Johnson 9.9. The Bearcats' quest to three-peat as PBC Tournament champions begins Tuesday night when they host UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m.
 

 Montevallo (14-13, 7-10) -- The Falcons wrapped up the 2009-10 season with a pair of losses. UM fell on the road to GCSU before returning home and dropping an overtime contest with Columbus State. The Falcons fell just one spot shy of the PBC Tournament field. UM fell to GCSU 65-54 and were led by junior Carrie Parrott who had 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Alex Sanabria had 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Alicia Lewis and junior Shan Jones each had nine points. Jones chipped in five rebounds and three steals as well. Senior Manal Cali scored six points and grabbed six boards in the effort. The Falcons won the battle in the paint outscoring the Bobcats 26-10 and also won the second chance points battle 12-6. The biggest difference between the two teams was the three-point attack. The Bobcats shot 45.8 percent from three-point range which was almost 10 percentage points higher than their average from the field. The Falcons shot just 26.3 percent from three-point range. UM then fell at home 63-53 to Columbus State in overtime. Cali led the team with a double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sanabria chipped in 13 points and five assists. Lewis had eight points while Jones scored eight points and had five rebounds. The Falcons return two of their top three scorers next year in Jones and Parrott. They also bring back four players who saw significant time on the court this season who will likely build the foundation of a successful 2010-11 Montevallo squad.
 

 North Georgia (9-17, 4-13) -- The Lady Saints dropped a pair of games last week, ending the regular season on a six-game losing, including a regular season finale thriller to GCSU. North Georgia opened the week against Clayton State, falling to the 22nd-ranked Lakers 71-63. Four players finished in double figures for the Lady Saints, led by Sarah Stinson’s 17 points and nine rebounds, while three other players finished with 10 points. Ealey tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Randolph and Marlow added 10 points apiece. Against the Bobcats, GCSU ended regulation on a 16-4 run to force overtime where the Bobcats once again took the lead, using a pair of buckets to take a 67-63 lead with just 1:18 remaining. The Lady Saints would make it interesting in the final minute as Kari McCann launched and drained a deep three-pointer to cut the Bobcat lead back to one, but GCSU rallied with five free throws in the final minute to come away with the 72-68 overtime victory. Whitney Randolph played in her final collegiate game, leading all scorers with 26 points, while the senior pulled down eight rebounds. Stinson tallied 16 points and tallied a double-double with 16 rebounds.
 

 UNC Pembroke (14-13, 8-10) -- UNCP went 2-1 this past week ... On Monday the Lady Braves matched up against North Georgia, facing their first overtime minutes of the 2009-10 season ... The Black and Gold came out ahead during its overtime period, making good on a costly turnover by the Lady Saints in the last seconds of the game for the PBC win, 88-85 ... On Wednesday UNCP faced their second overtime minutes in as many outings, and could not come out ahead against the Lady Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic, dropping the PBC contest in Alumni Arena, 83-80 ... UNCP was led by JaToya Kemp on Wednesday who put away a notable 41 points and snagged eight boards against the Lady Pirates ... Kemp’s 15-of-22 shooting from the field and perfect free throw percentage (11-of-11) marks a new career-best for the junior and also breaks AASU’s record of points put away by an opposing player (previously held by Joanna Cuprys of KSU - 38 points in 1997) ... Finishing up its regular season on Saturday, UNCP tipped off against Flagler for a senior night win, 73-48, in the English E. Jones Center.
 

 USC Aiken (15-12, 10-8) -- The USC Aiken women's basketball team will open the 2010 Marvin Vanover Peach Belt Conference Basketball Championship at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2 in Florence, S.C. against Francis Marion … USC Aiken concluded its 2009-10 regular season with an overall record of 15-12 … The Pacers were 10-8 in their PBC campaign … The Pacers are the third seed in the Peach Belt Conference East and they will open the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tournament at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2 against the PBC East No. 2 Francis Marion Patriots … The Pacers and Patriots will be vying for a place in the 2010 PBC Basketball Championship semifinals, which will be held at the Convocation Center in Aiken, S.C. on Saturday, March 6 … The winner of the USC Aiken-Francis Marion quarterfinal will advance on to face the winner of the Georgia College & State-Georgia Southwestern game ... The GCSU Bobcats claimed the top seed in the West, while the Hurricanes advanced to the PBC Tournament for the first time as the No. 4 seed in the West … USC Aiken and Francis Marion played twice in the 2009-10 season with Francis Marion earning a narrow victory in both games ... In the first meeting between the two on Dec. 2, 2009, USC Aiken led for the majority of the game, but FMU came back to earn a 69-65 victory … In the second meeting, USC Aiken nearly pulled off an upset over the 18th-ranked Patriots in a 79-77 loss … After battling for nearly 40 minutes, the game was settled on the last possession for USC Aiken as the Pacers were unable to get an open shot as time expired … The back-and-forth game was tied eight times, the lead changed hands five times and both teams acquired double-digit leads on one another before the two-point conclusion … Francis Marion led by as many as 11 points, while USC Aiken garnered a 12- point advantage at one point in the contest … According to USC Aiken athletic records, USC Aiken and Francis Marion have tangled 63 times on the hardwood overall with Francis Marion owning a 44-19 all-time series advantage … The Patriots have won the last four in the series, which includes a 101-83 victory over the Pacers in the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Southeast Region Tournament.
