FLORENCE, S.C. – The Peach Belt Conference released the 2010 softball All-Conference team at a banquet in Florence, S.C., site of the 2010 PBC Tournament. UNC Pembroke’s Jelena Shaw was named the PBC Player of the Year while North Georgia’s Sarah Phillips was the Pitcher of the Year. UNCP’s Holly Berry was the Freshman of the Year while North Georgia’s Mike Davenport was named the PBC Coach of the Year. In all, 32 players were named to either the first or second team.
Shaw led the PBC in hitting with a .441 batting average in 2010. The senior from Hope Mills, N.C. also led the league in hits, runs, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage. She broke the PBC career records for hits, runs scored, at bats, home runs, total bases and assists this year. Shaw had 11 multi-RBI contests and had a 19-game hitting streak snapped in the final game of the regular season. She becomes the first UNCP softball player to ever be named the PBC Player of the Year.

Sarah Phillips earns her second consecutive PBC Pitcher of the Year award, becoming only the second PBC player to win the award twice, the first since Armstrong Atlantic State’s Katya Eronina in 2003-04. Phillips guided the #1-ranked North Georgia Saints to a singular season, leading the nation in wins with a 34-0 record. A junior from Powell, Ohio, she is the only PBC starting pitcher with an ERA under one at 0.76 and also leads the league in innings pitched and strikeouts. A four-time PBC Pitcher of the Week, she is averaging more than a strikeout per inning and has a nation-best 16 shutouts on the year.
Holly Berry led the PBC in hitting for the majority of the regular season and finishes the season second in the league with a .434 average. The newcomer from Seagrove, N.C., was also named first-team All-Conference at third base after driving in 46 runs, third-best in the PBC, and 62 hits, also third in the league. Berry also hit eight home runs and collected 11 doubles. She becomes the first UNCP softball player to be named the Freshman of the Year.
Mike Davenport collects his second PBC Coach of the Year award after leading North Georgia through a record-breaking 2010 season. North Georgia has been the #1-ranked team in the nation for the past seven weeks and are the only NCAA softball team, in Divisions I, II or III, to be undefeated on the season. Now 41-0 overall and 20-0 in conference play, the Saints broke Kennesaw State’s PBC record of 40 straight wins with their sweep of Lander on Wednesday. Now in his 10th season at the school, Davenport broke the 400-win plateau last week.
The softball all-conference team is listed below as selected by the league’s head coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
