Apr 14, 2009 Softball Daily Update - April 14 The 2009 season may very well be remembered more for the rain
than anything else as precipitation once again has reared its wet,
ugly head and disrupted what should have been the end of the
regular season. Instead, that honor will fall on Wednesday as three
PBC games remain to be played.
The key series is in Pembroke where Armstrong Atlantic State shut
out UNC Pembroke 13-0 in game one of their doubleheader. Game two
was tied 3-3 in the sixth when lightning and rain caused a
postponement. The second game will conclude on Wednesday at
1:00.
In the game that was completed, AASU's Emily Headrick pitched a
complete-game one-hitter, striking out four. Nicole Huddleston went
2-for-3 with a double and five RBIs.
Wednesday's two innings will have a significant impact on the
seedings for the PBC Tournament. An AASU win will put the Pirates
in a three-way tie for third with Augusta State and USC Aiken. In
the three-way tie, all three teams split with each other, but USC
Aiken will claim the #3 seed thanks to their win over North Georgia
earlier this year. Armstrong Atlantic State would be the #4 seed
thanks to their win over GCSU earlier this year, putting ASU at
#5.
However, a UNCP win in those two innings tomorrow will put AASU at
the 5 seed and move ASU to #4.
For UNC Pembroke, a loss on Wednesday drops them into a tie with
Francis Marion. FMU would win that tiebreaker thanks to their win
over GCSU earlier this year and give the Patriots the 7 seed. A
UNCP win would put the Lady Braves at #7.
Also postponed on Tuesday was the North Georgia/GCSU doubleheader.
Those games will not have an affect on the seedings as North
Georgia has locked up the #1 seed while GCSU is #2. Those games
will be at 6:00 on Wednesday.
Augusta State put themselves into the tiebreak conversation as
they swept Lander 7-1 and 3-1 on Tuesday. Kacee Camp went 2-for-4
with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs in the opener. Sara
DeMuth threw five innings of three-hit ball. In game two, Emily
Corish got the win for ASU, pitching four two-hit innings while
Jennifer Miller got the save with three no-hit innings.
In non-conference play, Columbus State swept Albany State 5-1 and
2-0. Jennifer Isasi threw a three-hit shutout in the second
game.
The PBC softball tournament bracket will finally be relased
following the conclusion of the AASU/UNCP game on Wednesday.
