Lander Adds Two to Softball for 2010

GREENWOOD – Abbeville High School’s Blair Hammonds and Broome High School’s Shelbey Spencer have signed national letter of intents to join the Lander softball team for the 2009-10 academic year announced Bearcat coach Brandon Duncan.

Hammonds, a middle infielder, was named All-Region the past two years.

“The first thing you notice about Blair is the sheer athleticism she brings to the field,” said Duncan. “She plays a very good shortstop and swings a good bat. I expect her to come into the program and immediately help us by adding depth to the middle of our infield and our offensive lineup.”

Spencer, who was featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in 2008, was All-State team last year while garnering Region Co-Player of the Year honors. She holds numerous Broome High School pitching records.

“I have known Shelbey for a long time and to have her joining us next fall is really exciting,” said Duncan. “Last season she really put herself on the map in terms of college exposure and we are fortunate that she chose to be a Bearcat. She will immediately add depth to our pitching staff.”
