Peach Belt Announces Men’s Tennis Preseason All-Conference Team
AUGUSTA, GA – The Peach Belt Conference has announced the 2012 men’s tennis preseason All-Conference team from the league office in Augusta, Ga. The six-member team was selected by the league’s head coaches and features players from four Peach Belt schools with Armstrong Atlantic State leading the way with three selections. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Armstrong’s Eudaldo Bonet was named the 2011 PBC Player of the Year, his second Player of the Year honor in his three seasons with the Pirates. Returning for his senior year, the native of Barcelona, Spain, was named an ITA All-American as a junior and was ranked #1 in the nation in singles following the 2011 year. He was 25-2 in singles last season and named the PBC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Mikk Irdoja also returns for his senior season at Armstrong. The Talinn, Estonia, native was a 2011 ITA All-American in singles and doubles and finished the year ranked #1 in doubles and sixth in singles. He teamed with Rafael Array to capture the ITA ‘Super Bowl’ doubles championship in the fall and the team is 43-4 overall in doubles play. Irdoja was named the PBC Player of the Year in 2010.
Matus Mydla returns for his junior season at Armstrong after being named All-Conference at singles and doubles last year. The Trecin, Slovakia, native finished 2011 ranked #24 in the nation and was 30-7 overall in singles. He paired with teammate Pedro Scocuglia to earn the 2011 PBC Tournament Doubles MVP title and was 23-2 in singles play during the year.
Lander’s Paul-Henri Arrigoni begins the 2012 spring season ranked #15 in the nation in singles by the ITA. A returning junior from Bordeaux, France, he was named first-team All-Conference last year after going 15-4 in singles play, 8-1 in the Peach Belt. He was named an ITA All-American.
Jerome Leborgne of Georgia College was 9-8 playing at #1 singles last season. Named PBC All-Conference, he was ranked 16th nationally after wins over a pair of nationally ranked opponents. 12-10 overall in singles, the returning senior from Coordimanche, France, was 9-8 at the #1 spot and 3-2 at #2.
Bernardo Fernandes was named PBC All-Conference in 2011, playing at #1 singles for the Augusta State Jaguars. A returning senior from Santana do Livramento, Brazil, he was ranked as high as 37th in the nation and had a win over Armstrong’s Mikk Irdoja.
