ATHENS, Ga. - Lander's Sheharyar Wali won the Division II
championship singles title at this past weekend's Southern
Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia
at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Wali, a freshman from Toronto, Canada, defeated Middle Tennessee
State University's Richard Cowden, 6-1, 7-5, Monday morning for the
title.
Wali advanced to the championship match by defeating, in order,
Tennessee Tech's Lloyd Harris, 6-2, 7-6; Vanderbilt's Adam Baker,
6-1, 6-2; Armstrong Atlantic's Rafael Array, 6-2, 6-4; Central
Florida's Terek Ben Soltane, 6-2, 7-6; and Wake Forest's Carlos
Salmon.
Lander's Carlos Marques reached the quarterfinals of the Division
II singles when he defeated, in order, Jacksonville's Vinny
Craveiro, 6-3, 6-3; and Kennesaw State's Andrew Suesserman, 6-0,
6-4; then lost to Wake Forest's David Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2.
In the Division II doubles competition, the Lander doubles team of
Wali/Henrik Willers won matches against South Florida's
Adderley/Pukal, 8-6, and the College of Charleston's
Koncilia/Nicolazzi, 8-5, before losing to Georgia Tech's
Potvin/Roebuck, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
