| North Georgia (5-10-1, 1-6-1) -- The Saints
suffered a loss and battled to a tie to end the regular season as
North Georgia enters the 2009 PBC Tournament. North Georgia started
the week against the #1 team in the country as the Saints traveled
to Lees-McRae and gave up an early goal as the Bobcats held for the
1-0 shutout. The loss at LMC was North Georgia’s second top
ranked opponent this season after hosting and falling to Tampa
University earlier in the season when the Spartans held the top
spot in the poll. After a tough road defeat, the Saints came home
and battled UNC Pembroke to a 1-1 deadlock over two overtimes. The
Saints finally tied the game in the 63rd minute as Ben Tayi struck
for his first collegiate goal. The unassisted goal knotted the
score at a goal apiece. Both teams had numerous chances to break
the tie at the end of regulation and in both overtimes, but North
Georgia’s Tanaskovic and UNC Pembroke’s Horatio Bynes
made a series of miraculous saves in goal down the stretch to
preserve the 1-1 tie. North Georgia will travel to St. Augustine
for the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the
Saints will battle PBC Regular Season Champion Flagler for the
right to advance to the "PBC Final Four" in Augusta next weekend.
In a physical contest just a week ago that featured five yellow
cards and a pair of ejections, Flagler emerged victorious, but
North Georgia is looking to deny the new league member their first
PBC Tournament victory, while the Saints will be looking to win
their first round tournament game for the third straight
season.
