UNC Pembroke Wins Chick-Fil-A; GCSU Falls in Playoff at Southeastern
The UNC Pembroke Braves won their first event since 2005 as they took the Chick-Fil-A Intercollegiate hosted by LRC and Catawba. GCSU tied for first, but fell in a playoff, at the Southeastern Intercollegiate in Valdosta.
UNCP freshman Jordan Walor shot a six-under-par 138 over the
course of two rounds to set a new school record for 36 holes,
shooting a blistering 66 in the final round of the
Lenoir-Rhyne/Catawba Intercollegiate on Tuesday to win his second
tournament this season.
UNCP recorded team rounds of 296 and 306 to finish with a 602,
seven strokes ahead of second place Lenoir-Rhyne (302-307). Wingate
(304-310) finished five strokes back of LRC at 614 to earn third
place at the par-72, 6,610-yard Lake Hickory Country Club.
Walor shot rounds of 72 and 66 to earn his second tournament title
this year, having placed first at the State Farm-Laker Collegiate
Classic on Sept. 30. Fellow freshman Jonathan McCurry tied for
seventh carding rounds of 73 and 80 for a 153 with Matthew Montford
posting 75-80 for a 155 and a 13th place tie. Taylor Ferguson
(76-80) and Andy Case (82-81) to round out the UNCP competitors
shooting 156 and 163, respectively, to finish 18th and tied for
26th.
It took a two-hole playoff, but the No. 8 Georgia College &
State University golf squad was finally upended by No. 6 Nova
Southeastern University at the Southeastern Collegiate, hosted by
No. 15 Valdosta State University.
The Bobcats led the first two rounds on the par-72, 7,127-yard
Kinderlou Forest Golf Club course. For the three rounds, the
Bobcats fired an eight under 856 (285-283-288). After both teams
shot even par on the first playoff hole, the Sharks shot one-under
on the second hole to grab the win.
Junior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) led Georgia College for
the fifth-straight tournament, taking third overall for the
third-straight. Johansson carded a 70-71-71=212 at four-under, two
strokes off the lead.
Junior Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had his best finish since
taking fifth at the Raines Intercollegiate in the fall. Lima
finished two-under in eighth (72-69-73=214). Sophomore Billy Shida
(Berkeley Lake, Ga.) finished strong with a pair of 71s after an
opening 73 to take 13th with a cumulative 215.
Sophomore Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) and junior Francisco Bide
(Buenos Aires, Argentina/El Diamante (Calif.)) just missed the
top-20 at 27th. Bide trimmed a stroke off yesterday's effort
(72-74-73=219) while Young had better efforts in the first two days
(71-72-76=219).
Clayton State finished ninth and Lander 11th at the Southeastern. Clayton's Wade Binfield finished second overall after rounds of 71-70-70=211 (-5).
Columbus State fired a final round 292 (+4) to finish in fourth place at the Grub Mart Intercollegiate, hosted by Jacksonville State University. Armstrong Atlantic State placed sixth at 594 in the largely Division I field.
