Feb 4, 2009 Francis Marion Entertains Make-A-Wish Families FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University hosted several
Make-A-Wish Foundation families at a recent home basketball
doubleheader, and the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC) continued its tradition of the Halftime Halfcourt
Shootout to raise funds for Make-A-Wish.
Several volunteers with the Florence chapter of the Make-A-Wish
Foundation were also present at the game. Their chapter serves the
Pee Dee region of eastern South Carolina and is one of the oldest
chapters in the state.
SAAC president Amanda Doyle, a member of the Patriot cross country
team, and secretary/treasurer Jessica Birchmeier, an FMU softball
player, helped entertain the Make-A-Wish families at the game.
Pictures were taken with the FMU cheerleaders and members of the
Patriot men’s basketball team.
“The SAAC organizations at the NCAA Division II level all
help raise funds for this worthwhile effort,” said FMU
director of athletics Murray Hartzler. “However, this day
allowed our student-athletes to get an up-close-and-personal look
at Make-A-Wish. It is one thing to give money, but another to
actually meet young people who are fighting the battle of their
lives and who just want to live out a dream. We hope our guests
enjoyed their afternoon at FMU.”
On April 9, the SAAC at FMU will hold a benefit Bar-B-Que with
proceeds going to Make-A-Wish.
At all FMU home basketball games, the SAAC hosts its Halftime
Halfcourt Shootout. For only a dollar, any fan can attempt a
halfcourt shot to win an FMU beach towel with all monies raised
going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
